Maldives became a member state of United Nations in September 1965. UN Country Team (UNCT) in Maldives consists of resident and non-resident members. There are officially 4 resident agencies in the UNCT: UNDP, UNICEF, WHO and UNFPA. All the other members of UNCT are non-resident agencies (NRAs) including UNOPS, UN Women, IOM, FAO, UNODC, UNESCO, ILO and UNEP, based (primarily) in Colombo, New Delhi and Bangkok. UN Women, UNOPS, IOM and World Bank have staff working in Maldives.

The UN System in the Maldives supports achievements of national development priorities through United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). The current UNDAF covers the period 2016-2020.
