3 July 2005 Male’, Maldives – Response to the Psychosocial Impact of the Tsunami Disaster in the Maldives (MDVTR301) has been signed today. At the ceremony held on 3rd July 2005 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hussain Shihab signed the project on behalf of the Government of Maldives and Mr. Patrice Couer-Bizot signed on behalf of the UNFPA. The Director of the Ministry of Gender, Family Development and Social Security, Dr. Aishath Shiham signed on behalf of the Implementing Partner.

Ms Dunya Maumoon, UNFPA Assistant Representative and Dr. Abdul Azeez Yoosuf, Director General of Health Services were also present.

The project focuses on assessing the psychosocial wellbeing of the affected populations by conducting studies, strengthening the capacity of the health staff and place trained staff in the affected communities to enhance the sustainability of the national and community level capacities to the psychosocial wellbeing of its people.

The project activities will be focused on the most impacted atolls namely: Raa, Meemu, Thaa, Dhaalu and Laamu Atolls. The project will be executed by UNFPA and the Ministry of Gender, Family Development and Social Security will be the main implementing partner. UNFPA will also liase closely with the Ministry of Health and national NGCs working in the field of psychosocial support.Total value of the project is US$ 250,000 and the main donors are Japan, China and OCHA.
