The Government of Maldives and UNFPA sign two projects under UNFPA’s Reproductive Health Sub Program

UNFPA Maldives 31 March 2003- Two new projects have been signed today between the Government of Maldives and the United Nations Population Fund under UNFPA’s Third Country Programme for the Maldives. At a ceremony held today at the Department of External Resources, the Director General of External Resources Mr. Ahmed Latheef signed the projects on behalf of the Government of the Maldives.

On behalf of UNFPA, the UNFPA Representative Mr. Minh H. Pham signed the projects. Dr. Abdul Azeez Yoosuf, Director General of Health Services signed the Quality of Care project on behalf of the Executing Agency and Mr. Mohamed Rasheed, Director, Ministry of Education signed on the ARH project on behalf of the Executing Agency.

The two projects are:

1. Quality of Care in Reproductive Health-, which is aimed at strengthening, the management of the national reproductive health program by increasing the availability of quality reproductive health services and information in selected regions and atolls. UNFPA will contribute to US$ 450,000 for five years towards the implementation of the project with the government contributing US$ 45,000 (Rf 573,750). This project will be executed by the Ministry of Health and implemented by the Ministry of Health and the Department of Public Health.
2. Adolescent Reproductive Health and Life Skills- aimed at strengthening life skills development programs for the promotion of adolescent sexual and reproductive health.  UNFPA will contribute US$ 250,000 for four years towards implementation of the project with the government contributing US$ 25,000 (Rf 318,750. This project will be executed by the Ministry of Education and implemented by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Faculty of Education, Girl Guides Association, Scouts Association, SHE and FASHAN

Both these projects fall under the Reproductive Health Sub Program the main outcome of which is to contribute towards increasing utilisation of quality reproductive health information and services and improved adolescent reproductive and sexual health.
UNFPA has allocated total resources amounting to US$ 2 million for its Third Country Programme for the years 2003 to 2007. UNFPA’s regular sources will make up US$ 1.4 million of this amount. The goal of the Country Programme is to contribute to the national goal of improving the quality of life of the Maldivian people through improved reproductive health status and the empowerment of women.
