Government of Maldives and UN sign new strategic framework to deliver development results over the next five years

Male’, 24 August 2015: The Government of Maldives and the United Nations in the Maldives agrees to work together on four areas to deliver development results in the next 5 years. The 2016-2020 United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Ms. Shoko Noda at an event held at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The four outcome areas identified in this framework are Youth and Children, Gender, Governance and Environment and Climate Change. Across these four areas, the UNDAF will promote efficient distribution of development benefits and social inclusion of vulnerable groups through strengthened institution building, evidence-based policy implementation and national capacity development. Most importantly, this UNDAF will support, promote and monitor the implementation of international agreements and obligations of Maldives in contribution to the principles of human rights, gender equality and environmental sustainability.

This framework has been jointly formulated by the Government, UN agencies, Civil Society and partners with extensive consultation and collaboration. Eleven UN agencies will participate in the implementation of the framework. UNDAF will require over US$ 53 million, quarter of which is expected directly to enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Government of Maldives and the United Nations will closely monitor achievements of the results throughout the UNDAF cycle.
