Parliamentary Elections in the Maldives
The United Nations notes the important achievements the Maldives has made to date in its democratic transition, including the peaceful holding of the presidential and parliamentary elections. The United Nations, which sent small assessment missions for last year’s presidential election and for the parliamentary elections held on 9 May, will continue to closely monitor post-election developments and remains committed to working with the country to strengthen its democracy. Such historic transitions are accompanied by important challenges. In this regard, as the Maldives moves to consolidate its democracy, with the first sitting of the new parliament expected soon, the United Nations would like to underline the importance for the Government and all political parties to uphold the spirit of cooperation and constructive engagement and to refrain from acting in ways that would jeopardize the democratic gains.
